Link schemes
Your site's ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to you. The quantity, quality, and relevance of links count towards your rating. The sites that link to you can provide context about the subject matter of your site, and can indicate its quality and popularity. However, some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact your site's ranking in search results. Examples of link schemes can include: The best way to get other sites to create relevant links to yours is to create unique, relevant content that can quickly gain popularity in the Internet community. The more useful content you have, the greater the chances someone else will find that content valuable to their readers and link to it. Before making any single decision, you should ask yourself the question: Is this going to be beneficial for my page's visitors? It is not only the number of links you have pointing to your site that matters, but also the quality and relevance of those links. Creating good content pays off: Links are usually editorial votes given by choice, and the buzzing blogger community can be an excellent place to generate interest. In addition, submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites. Once you've made your changes and are confident that your site no longer violates our guidelines, submit your site for reconsideration. If you'd like to discuss this with Google, or have ideas for how we can better communicate with you about it, please post in our webmaster discussion forum.
Why should I report paid links to Google? Google and most other search engines use links to determine reputation. A site's ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to it. Link-based analysis is an extremely useful way of measuring a site's value, and has greatly improved the quality of web search. Both the quantity and, more importantly, the quality of links count towards this rating. However, some SEOs and webmasters engage in the practice of buying and selling links that pass PageRank, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results. Not all paid links violate our guidelines. Buying and selling links is a normal part of the economy of the web when done for advertising purposes, and not for manipulation of search results. Links purchased for advertising should be designated as such. This can be done in several ways, such as: Google works hard to ensure that it fully discounts links intended to manipulate search engine results, such excessive link exchanges and purchased links that pass PageRank. If you see a site that is buying or selling links that pass PageRank, let us know. We'll use your information to improve our algorithmic detection of such links. Google searches more sites more quickly, delivering the most relevant results. Introduction Google runs on a unique combination of advanced hardware and software. The speed you experience can be attributed in part to the efficiency of our search algorithm and partly to the thousands of low cost PC's we've networked together to create a superfast search engine. The heart of our software is PageRank™, a system for ranking web pages developed by our founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University. And while we have dozens of engineers working to improve every aspect of Google on a daily basis, PageRank continues to play a central role in many of our web search tools. PageRank Explained PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at considerably more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; for example, it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important." Using these and other factors, Google provides its views on pages' relative importance. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines dozens of aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query. Google's complex automated methods make human tampering with our search results extremely difficult. And though we may run relevant ads above and next to our results, Google does not sell placement within the results themselves (i.e., no one can buy a particular or higher placement). A Google search provides an easy and effective way to find high-quality websites that contain information relevant to your search.
Advanced link checking strategies with Search Engines first let us see how to check backlinks in Yahoo and MSN using advanced link checking strategies, Yahoo Backlink Checking Strategies As we all know yahoo is the 2nd best search engine out there, Their crawler So even if yahoo is not evil in displaying random sampling of backlinks they dont show the backlinks Ok here are some typical ways to check backlinks in yahoo, There are 2 backlink checking commands in linkdomain: Correct syntax: linkdomain:www.anysite.com Wrong Syntax linkdomain:http://www.antsite.com There are some advanced ways of using this command, We can exclude same site urls, particular site linkdomain: linkdomain:www.anysite.com -site:www.anysite.com >>>. This will display links to any site excluding linkdomain:www.google.com -site:www.google.com Suppose if you have not set any 301 redirect and the site has 2 versions, One the without www Search engines consider www.yoururl.com different from yoururl.com, It is because To exclude this type of duplicate pages in the backlink checking we can use something like, linkdomain:www.anysite.com -site:www.anysite.com -site:anysite.com The above command will exclude all pages from the same site which will help us to measure the exact Yahoo does allow queries with more than 10 words, Google has a restriction of queries with more than 10 words, This is a bad decision from google, There are many people who search with more than 10 words in the search query and those type of searches are cut down to 10 words, I say this because the following command will have more than 10 words in the search query, linkdomain:www.anysite.com -site:www.anysite.com -site:anysite.com -site:linkingsite.com -site:www.linkingsite.com The above search query will exclude same site links from the backlinks as well as any particular site you want to exclude from your backlinks, It is very useful especially if you want to exclude any site where you have bought text link ads or site wide links, The above search will exclude any site from the backlink check which has the keyword or keyword phrase in the URL or their domain name, For example Linkdomain:www.google.com –inurl:froogle The above search will exclude backlinks with the keyword froogle in their URL or domain name, Linkdomain:www.google.com –inurl:blogger google The above search will exclude backlinks with the keyword phrase blogger gogole in their URL or domain name, linkdomain:www.yoururl.com -intitle:keyword The above search will exclude sites with the particular keyword in their URL in the backlink checking, For example: linkdomain:www.google.com -intitle:google The above search will exclude all back links with the word google in title linkdomain:www.yoururl.com -link:http://www.yoururl.com This is a useful but a bit complex search query, The above query will show backlinks for a site excluding a particular page, In the above example the homepage is excluded from the linkdomain search, So when we search we will see backlinks to pages in our site excluding the homepage, Example: linkdomain:www.google.com -link:http://www.google.com The above search will show all links to the domain google.com excluding links that are pointing to the homepage of that site, Very useful while doing some researching stuff, Now we will see the link: function, This function behaves similar to the linkdomain: function, the only difference this function will show links pointing only to that particular page we are checking backlinks, For example: Link:http://www.google.com The above command will show all links pointing to the URL www.google.com that yahoo knows of, Link: command can also be used with other advanced features, 1.) link:http://www.anysite.com -site:www.anysite.com >>>. This will display links to the checking page excluding the internal pages of that site, Example: link:http://www.google.com -site:www.google.com The above example will show all links pointing to that particular page excluding the internal pages of that domain, Suppose if you have not set any 301 redirect and the site has 2 versions, One the without www Search engines consider www.yoururl.com different from yoururl.com, It is because To exclude this type of duplicate pages in the backlink checking we can use something like, link:http://www.anysite.com -site:www.anysite.com -site:anysite.com The above command will exclude all pages from the same site which will help us to measure the exact Yahoo does allow queries with more than 10 words, Google has a restriction of queries with more than 10 words, This is a bad decision from google, There are many people who search with more than 10 words in the search query and those type of searches are cut down to 10 words, I say this because the following command will have more than 10 words in the search query, link:http://www.anysite.com -site:www.anysite.com -site:anysite.com -site:linkingsite.com -site:www.linkingsite.com The above search query will exclude same site links from the backlinks as well as any particular site you want to exclude from your backlinks, It is very useful especially if you want to exclude any site where you have bought text link ads or site wide links, link:http://www.anysite.com -inurl:keyword or keyword phrase The above search will exclude any site from the backlink check which has the keyword or keyword phrase in the URL or their domain name, For example link:http://www.google.com –inurl:froogle The above search will exclude backlinks with the keyword froogle in their URL or domain name, link:http://www.google.com –inurl:blogger google The above search will exclude backlinks with the keyword phrase blogger google in their URL or domain name, Next: link:http://www.yoururl.com -intitle:keyword The above search will exclude sites with the particular keyword in their URL in the backlink checking, if the linking site has that keyword in their title then those sites will be excluded from the backlink search. For example: link:http://www.google.com -intitle:google The above search will exclude all back links with the word google in title Next: link:http://www.yoururl.com "keyword phrase" The above search will return backlink pages with that particular keyword phrase in it, For example: link:http://www.google.com "search engine company" The above search will return backlink pages with search engine company in it, MSN.com Backlink Checking Strategies MSN results are right now powered by yahoo, so most of the command used in yahoo will imply for MSN too, The 2 basic commands for backlink checking in MSN is link: and linkdomain: Link: will display all links that MSN search knows for a particular page, Linkdomain: will display all links that MSN search knows for a particular domain, Next important search engine we will see is Alltheweb.com, Alltheweb was a powerful search engine before it was aquired by yahoo, Now that it is owned by yahoo the results in alltheweb.com is powered by yahoo, The important backlink command for alltheweb.com is Link:www.anyurl.com The above command will display all links to that particular page, GOOGLE – GOOGLE Link checking strategies Finally, Last but not the least let us deal some strategies on link checking with google, Google as we all know is by far the best search engine out there, Still they dominate the search market and majority of the search users are google users, Most of the users prefer google to find information, they switch search engine only if they don’t find what they want in google, Google’s crawler is the most active crawler out there in indexing sites, They run around indexing sites all the time, So they have the most up to date information of pages which are updated recently, So it simply means they know most of the links pointing to our sites, Google’s backlink checking command is link: , This command was working mean before Jun 2004, This command used to show backlinks which has a pagerank of more than 4, (Pagerank is the technology of google to measure the importance of a page based on the links pointing to that page – More here(http://www.google.com/technology/)) But after June 2004 Google purposely broke the backlink checking command since they felt it is manipulating their search results too much, SEO Spammers exploited google a lot using that command, They check the backlinks of important sites and figure our who links to them and use those data to improve their own sites, Especially Link mongers used those commands as a part of their business and they sold links based on the number of links showing on the backlinks in google after buying their services, This must have made google frustrated and they purposely broke that command so that it wont serve as a tool for spammers, As we all know end users are not aware of that tool much, It is mostly used by SEOs/ webmasters / site owners and spammers, So even if google broke that command it wont affect their reputation much since it is not affecting end users, Also serving wrong data on that command will confuse a lot of newbies / webmasters and poor knowledge SEOs and this inturn will make people more difficult to figure out their ranking algorithm, So serving wrong data and random results on that command will be a benefit for google and this should have been the motive of google too, I do see in established forums people trying to figure out what is showing in the backlink command, this just proves how well google has executed their plan, google’s primary motive in serving wrong results on that command is to confuse newbie SEOs and they must have achieved that google perfectly, This will make google guy’s giggle sitting before the computers and reading those funny threads in forums, In my opinion 100% there is no theory involved in the current showing of backlinks, What ever that is showing is just a random sample mixture of backlinks, What ever the site possess is no where to be shown, So why am I mentioning google back link checking still, it is because google is the most active crawler out there , they know most of the inbound links to a site and there should be ways around that junk command in checking back links for a page in google, Ok before we start using other link checking tactics in google, Let us start with the basics, First check the backlinks of a site with the link: command, Though this command is broken still it will show a sample backlink list a page possesses, Syntax: link:www.anyurl.com or link:http://www.anyurl.com Example: Link:www.google.com or link:http://www.google.com The above sample will show the backlinks to that page which google knows and likes to show with that command, Then we have the unique domain search, Suppose if you have a unique domain name, Like say nigerianspam.com, we can use the domain only search here, We just have to insert the word nigerianspam into google, This search will show pages/ links with the instance of the word nigerianspam in it, Some people who link naturally don’t know the value of anchor text and they just link with the domain name, So it is easy to track those type of backlinks, For example check these sample codes, <a href="http://www.google.com">Google</a> or <a href="http://www.google.com">www.google.com</a> Both the above examples will look like this, www.google.com So when google indexes pages with these type of links, they take the domain name as the onpage text and when we do a search for unique domain name they will list it in their results, Similiarly we can do the double quotes search, Example “www.nigerianspam.com” This search is similar to the search example shown above, If we search using this string it will search for all instances of the URL: www.nigerianspam.com on the page, So when someone links with this URL and google picks it up it will show in the url only search with quotes, There are many variations of this searches, all of them yield the same result, Variation examples, "www.+anysite.+com" All the above examples will show results where the instance of the domain name exists, Remember not all instances of the the above URL are links it can be just a plain text URL without links mentioned on the page somewhere, Or it can be just a PPC URL which the googlebot picked up, Only way to confirm is to check the cache of the page where the URL exists and see whether it is a link or just some plain text, Another good option to check back links is to see the catch of the pages you think or know where your links are, You should be aware of some locations where you have placed your links, To check whether google knows that link or not, check the cache of that page, if the link exists on that page and if the link is not broken then you should be happy that google has seen that link and indexed it, That link related or unrelated should be playing a part in the ranking of your site, Next good option is the phrase checking option, Suppose if you are involved in reciprocal link building campaign take some precautions before exchanging links, Use unique description when you exchange links with other sites, For example say I want to exchange link for cnn.com and increase their popularity, As a preplanned tactic ill use the following title and description while exchanging links with relevant sites, Cnn.com is one of the best News site on the web, Cnn provides news on politics, crime, stoke quotes and more. In the above example I use an unique description on describing cnn.com, So when I exchange links ill provide this description, Ok now when I do the search taking 10 words from the above description using double quotes in google, “Cnn.com is one of the best News site on the web”, it yields zero results, when I start building links, pages with the above description will be indexed by google and will start showing as snippets when we search for that phrase, Since we are starting the campaign with zero results we can track down every page which bears the above phrase in it, This is one of the perfect way in finding our links via google, We as a search engine optimization company specializing in reciprocal link building use this tactic extensively, Next useful command is the intext:<search phrase in quotes> This acts similar to the above phrase search, Example: intext:"google the best search engine" will give results with the phrase google the best search engine anywhere in the text of the web pages, This is an other useful command to check the pages bearing our links, Conclusion Search Engines keep changing what they show in some advanced operators, this document cannot be the same all the time, At the time of writing all the above syntax used are 100% perfect without any errors, But it might change as the search engines update them selves, This article is for education purpose only,
